If you’re a basketball fan; I mean a true basketball fan, this is the best time of the year. This is your Christmas; the day where you spend half of your work day finding the most legible brackets to print off from your computer at work - Well, anyway, I usually take my stab at predicting who is gonna do what over the next two weeks; with little success, but this time I’m putting my thoughts in living color for all the world to see. Gulp! Today, we’ll start with the Midwest Regions. Here goes.

First off, two things are readily apparent when you take a brief glance at seeds and the regions. The Midwest is a killer. I’m talking Tyson in his prime killer. The top four teams: Kansas, Ohio State, Georgetown and Maryland - if these squads were put in separate regions, it could be argued all four would have a legitimate chance to make a run to the final four. Okay, let’s take it a step further. The five and six seeds, Michigan State and Tennessee respectively, both have impressive pedigrees.

Gladness climbing the ladder towards NBA dream PDF Print E-mail

Mickell Gladness left Alabama A&M two seasons ago as the school’s all-time leading shot blocker; blocking an NCAA record 16 in one game versus Texas Southern to break the mark set by David Robinson.  He was also a two-time first team All-SWAC performer by the time of his exodus from “The Hill”.

The gaudy defensive records and post season accolades didn’t land the Jasper, Alabama native an NBA contract or even a tryout.  Instead Gladness took his basketball talents to Europe; specifically, Holland and the Dutch professional league.  In two seasons with Magix Nijmegen, Mickell averaged just 2.7 ppg. and 4.0 rpg., while adjusting to various aspects of professional basketball.

100 YEARS OF BULLDOG FOOTBALL: IKE ROOKS PDF Print E-mail

In my 21 years associated with Alabama A&M University, two names have been synonymous with the school that sits atop "The Hill".

One is legendary, Hall of Fame football coach Louis Crews; the other is broadcasting icon Isaac "Ike" Rooks.  The "Grand Pooh Bah" of sports on the HBCU campus spanned an amazing 44 years calling both football and basketball.

Currently the host and producer of “The Locker Room” on WJAB-FM 90.9, Rooks can be heard giving his two cents along with co-hosts/producers, Ivan McDowell and Marcus Sims.

Always known as the "Voice of the Bulldogs", Rooks presence was unmistakable when calling the play-by-play of Alabama A&M football; Rooks also did play-by-play for Bulldog basketball. There was also no mistaking the passion and love Rooks put into every game since he started broadcasting the Bulldogs midway through the 1960 season on WEUP radio. The radio home for Bulldog sports has changed since that rookie season for both Rooks and then head coach Louis Crews and so has voice, but his dedication and commitment to his beloved university has never wavered.

New Auburn Coach Tony Barbee has quickly put his stamp on the program down on the plains.  Barbee, after leading UTEP to their first NCAA birth in over a decade, was chosen to basically do the same with a Tigers program that never seemed to get better under former Coach Jeff Lebo.
