Lacy pounds A&M to victory

Kaderius Lacy rushed for a career high 189 yards and a touchdown, while Alabama A&M came up with the big plays on special teams to hang on against Alabama State, 20-19.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in striking first.  Kaderius Lacy broke off a 44-yd scamper to set up Chance Wilson’s field goal from 19 yards out and the Bulldogs led 3-0.

On the Hornets second possession, Clarence Morris picked off the ASU pass and the Bulldogs regained the football and held the early momentum.  The Hornets came in as the perceived ball hawks, but the Bulldogs aggressiveness continued to pay off.

Melvin Payne recovered a quarterback fumble by ASU and A&M wasted no time in capitalizing.  Sparkman High graduate Terrance Pride took the handoff on the end around from Deauntae Mason and scampered 19 yards for the touchdown.  A stunned Alabama State was down 10-0 in the first quarter.

Alabama A&M fresh off a 37-14 shellacking of Mississippi Valley State on Homecoming squared off against Texas Southern on a rare Thursday evening game at Louis Crews Stadium.  The Bulldogs enter the contest ranked #10 in the latest SBN Poll and #6 in the HSRN Poll and Box to Row Coaches Poll.

A&M Quarterback Deauntae Mason has been coming on of late; throwing seven touchdowns in his last two games combined.  Texas Southern came in with the stoutest defense in the SWAC (#1 total defense), (#2 in pass efficiency defense) and sixth in rushing defense.

Texas Southern’s vaunted running attack of Marcus Wright and Martin Gilbert went to work in the first quarter to get the Tigers on the scoreboard.  Wright’s jaunt from 14 yards out gave TSU an early 7-0 lead.  Two minutes later Marcus Gilbert scampered 84 yards to the promised land and the Tigers led 14-0 heading into the second quarter.

After a Chance Wilson field goal and a Texas Southern turnover, Mason found DeMario Ross for 27 yards to set up the touchdown run by fullback Bryan Nelson from three yards out.  It was Nelson’s first career carry and touchdown.  The Bulldogs crept closer at 14-10.

Terrance Pride was on the receiving end of a 43-yard touchdown pass from Mason, aided by a great block from G’Alonzo Milton, and the Bulldogs took the lead 17-14 with 3:11 left in the half.

In the second half, the Bulldog defense came up with a huge takeaway when Joshua Udeh intercepted Tigers Quarterback Riko Smalls in the end zone to thwart a touchdown.  Theron Rice blocked an attempted Tigers field goal to spark the A&M special teams.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs it would be special teams that would do them in.  Reshaad DeJarnett muffed a Texas Southern punt and the Tigers recovered.  Martin Gilbert scored from 19-yards out to propel them into the lead.

DeJarnett redeemed himself once the Bulldogs regained the ball, as he was on the receiving end of a 70-yard pitch and catch from Deauntae Mason.  A&M jumped back into the lead, 24-21, with just over four minutes to go in the game.

Rico Porch intercepted Smalls pass and the Bulldogs closed out Texas Southern at home for a huge conference win.

The vaunted TSU defense came in with all the accolades, but it was the Bulldogs defense that came up big when it mattered most.  For the game, defensive end Corey Hart totaled eight tackles and two sacks, while Chris Ervin and Willie Fuller tallied seven tackles apiece.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were inconsistent, but Kaderius Lacy, despite two fumbles, rushed for 104 yards on 24 carries.  Wide receiver Montarius Smith caught three balls for 114 yards.

The Bulldogs have a bye next week before heading into Birmingham for the 70th Annual Magic City Classic and a tangle with arch rival Alabama State, the supposed best team in the SWAC.

Alabama A&M capitalized on three Tuskegee turnovers and a late Golden Tigers penalty to defeat Tuskegee, 21-6.

The Bulldogs returned home wounded both physically and mentally after losing their first two contests. A&M participated in the 17th Annual Chicago Football Classic, but fell to MEAC member Hampton University, 21-20. The following week the Bulldogs began conference play traveling to Baton Rouge to compete versus Southern University.

A failure to score any touchdowns in the red zone on offense, while continuing to be unable to muster any form of pass rush, found A&M on the wrong end of a 21-6 loss to the Jaguars.

Mason throws for three scores in Bulldogs rout

Alabama A&M welcomed winless Mississippi Valley State into Louis Crews Stadium for Homecoming 2011. A&M, winners of three in a row, were coming off a resilient win against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home last Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed 27-7 at the start of the fourth quarter, but scored 21 unanswered points to stun the Golden Lions 28-27.

MVSU came into the contest having lost 16 straight games overall and winless in the SWAC at 0-4. Valley has played better of late; having led at the half in their last three ballgames.

A&M got off to a great start when Corey Hart tipped a lateral, scooped and scored the opening touchdown for the Bulldogs. A shocked MVSU trailed 7-0 already. The Bulldogs capitalized on another attempted lateral and turnover by the Delta Devils capping a seven-play, 34-yd short drive and Kaderius Lacy jaunted in from two yards out. A&M led 14-0 early in the contest.

After a missed Valley field goal, A&M traveled 80 yards in 10 plays to score their third touchdown of the first quarter when DeAuntae’ Mason found G’Alonzo Milton down the sideline for a 29-yard touchdown pass. The route was on.

Sparkman High School’s Terrance Pride caught an 11-yard TD pass from Mason to make the score 28-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. Valley responded with a 34-yd touchdown pass from Jeff Thompkins to tight end Joseph Hardnett to give the Delta Devils some life at 28-7.

The Bulldogs quickly responded with a Mason to Kenneth Harris 27-yard touchdown pass to boost the score to 35-7. A&M’s defense came up with a safety on Valley’s next possession and took a 37-7 lead into halftime. A 12-play, 92-yard drive midway through the 4th quarter by the Delta Devils closed the gap to 37-14; still this contest was beyond over.

On the day, Mason finished 16 of 26 for 210 yards and three touchdowns. He spread the ball around to multiple receivers. The Bulldogs even threw to the tight end a few times. MVSU falls to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the SWAC. The Bulldogs improved to 4-2 and 3-1 in the SWAC.

Casey Canty dropped 22 points and added seven rebounds, leading five Bulldogs in double figures, as Alabama A&M won their season opener, 93-77.

Coach Vann Pettaway and Alabama A&M looked like the Bulldogs of old; high flying, pressing and trapping their way to easy baskets against Talladega; drudging up memories of former greats and a raucous Elmore Gymnasium.  Tornados wouldn’t go away and cut what was once an eighteen point lead, down to four in the second half.
